Beneficios de la próxima red ferroviaria única entre Canadá, EE.UU. y México

El pasado domingo se anunció la compra de la empresa estadounidense Kansas City Southern por la canadiense Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. (CP) por la cantidad de 29,000 millones de dólares. Esta fusión permitirá crear la primera red ferroviaria única entre Canadá, Estados Unidos y México, conectando unos 32,000 kilómetros de vías férreas.

Fusión al amparo del nuevo tratado de libre comercio T-MEC

Esta fusión ocurre al amparo del nuevo tratado de libre comercio T-MEC que entró en vigor el 1 de julio de 2020. Este nuevo marco comercial para norteamérica considera la integración eficiente de las cadenas de suministro en el continente como un aspecto fundamental para el comercio internacional de la región al respaldar el crecimiento económico de América del Norte. KCS afirmó que las nuevas ofertas de una sola línea de la red combinada brindarán un alcance de mercado drásticamente ampliado al combinar los puntos en el sistema CP canadiense, el medio oeste y el noroeste de Estados Unidos así como puntos en el sistema KCS en todo México y el centro-sur de Estados Unidos.

Nuevas opciones competitivas en transporte y una cadena de suministro sustentable

Aunado a lo anterior, se brindarán nuevas opciones competitivas de servicios de transporte bajo estándares de seguridad, servicio y desempeño así como se fomentará una cadena de suministro más sostenible para el planeta. “Hemos luchado por el medio ambiente reconociendo el importante rol que los ferrocarriles juegan en la reducción total de emisiones. Esta combinación impulsa nuestro compromiso, basado en elementos científicos y coherentes con los Acuerdos de París para mejorar la eficiencia del combustible y reducir las emisiones”, comentaron Creel y Ottensmeyer.

La nueva entidad ferroviaria se llamará Canadian Pacific Kansas City y su sede se encontrará en Calgary, provincia de Alberta. En nuestro país, las operaciones serán dirigidas desde la Ciudad de México y Monterrey. La compañía contará con un equipo de unos 20,000 empleados y generará unos 8,700 millones de dólares anuales en ingresos.
